The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

Title: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Author: Kate DiCamillo

GenreChildren's, Fantasy, Magical Realism

While DiCamillo is perhaps best known for "Tale of Despereaux" and "Because of Winn-Dixie", her somewhat lesser known "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" remains a personal favorite. Following the stuffed (yet sentient) China rabbit, Edward, through various parts of his life as a doll, the novel reflects on profound themes such as the impermanence of all things, the fragility of the ego, and the meaning of love and life itself. Set to evocative imagery by Bagram Ibatoulline, the story guides readers from turn of the century New York, to a trans-Atlantic boat voyage, to seaside towns and roadside farms, and introduces us to a wide range of characters of different ages, vocations, and social statuses, revealing the immensity of forms that human life can take. Readers young & old alike will appreciate the fable-esque narrative, beautiful illustrations, and the lessons and wisdom Edward's "miraculous journey" passes on.
