The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes

This book is inspired by an actual group of women who in 1935 signed up to become the first librarians of Roosevelt's Pack Horse Library Project in the rural hills of eastern Kentucky. As you quickly learn, this was no easy job and it was absolutely fascinating to learn of these brave, strong, gutsy women and their back-breaking, often perilous attempts to deliver books & magazines to the isolated, impoverished, and often illiterate men, women and children in the remote hills of the Appalachian mountains. Everything that makes a great book is included in this compelling story: friendship, hardship, romance, adventure and purpose. The author has a wonderful ability to create believable characters that you come to know, love and/or loathe. I thoroughly enjoyed this very readable book and give it my highest recommendation!

I'll Be the One by Lyla Lee

Title: I'll Be the One

Skye Shin is the total package: she can sing and dance amazingly. Only thing is, she's fatter than your typical K-Pop star, so when she decides to audition for an internationally broadcast competition, she knows it's going to be harder for her than most. Not only are the other competitors picture perfect, but they include gorgeous social media stars Henry Cho and his ex-girlfriend. While Skye's dad is totally on board, she is also coping with a less-than supportive mom at home who would rather Skye diet than dance. Can Skye achieve her dreams? Can she do it without losing herself in the process?

I liked this book because Skye knows who she is, and more importantly likes who she is, despite outside pressures to change. It's nice to have a protagonist that you can wholeheartedly cheer for.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

Title: The Unhoneymooners

Olive Torres has always been the unlucky one in the family. At her twin sister's wedding though, the bad luck seems to switch. When the entire wedding party gets food poisoning, the only people who aren't affected are Olive and Ethan, the best man who Olive despises. Due to being sick, Olive's sister Ami and husband Dane can't go on their non-refundable honeymoon. Not wanting to let Ethan enjoy a free vacation in paradise solo, Olive decides to go as well. While in Maui, Olive realizes that maybe she doesn't hate Ethan as much as she thought. I read this book in one sitting and deeply enjoyed all the hijinks that ensued both on the "honeymoon" and when they returned. This is a perfect book to read in the sun and imagine being on the beach in Hawaii.

Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said by Philip K. Dick

Title: Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said

Author: Philip K. Dick

Genre: Sci-fi, Dystopian Fiction

Jason Taverner is a well known TV personality and singer with 30 million viewers, at least he was until he woke up in a run down hotel without any of his ID cards. Living in a police state, failure to produce identification at one of the numerous police checkpoints would lead to imprisonment in a forced labor camp. He remains calm given his circumstances afterall his is a "Six", a member of an elite class of genetically engineered humans. He phones his mangager and a friend but they both claim to not know who he is, no one does. He needs the ID cards to go anywhere and therefore he finds a forger to make him some. He falls under the scruitiny of the L.A. police. He struggles with his identity and reality , and the reader is taken on a nerve wrecking experience. The main character isn' t very likeable, a bit racist, sexist, and pompous; you almost don't care what happens to him. The idea of the story is interesting and I was in suspense to find out what was going to happen but not for the faint of heart.

TW: this book contains some racist points of view from the main character, incest, and the consenting age was 12 (very unsettling).
